Leaving Boston by cruise ship (no, not a part of my ‘bucket list’ – but fun!) was one of those disorienting experiences that turned on new perception.
Like if you could somehow open the side of your refrigerator, instead of the door on the front, and everything you expected was still in there, but looked strange and compelling turned 90 degrees. New relationships between things would emerge – all the stuff at the back would suddenly be visible again – something would be unexpectedly beautiful or surprising. (Those long-lost pickles!)
My husband took this picture of our children which perfectly captures that feeling. It makes me think of what the boys’ relationship to Boston will become in one, two, three decades.
